Costa vegan meatball wrap

I clearly just seem to be on a bit of a coffee shop hype lately. I am not sure if it is the obscene heat that we are currently experiencing in England that makes me crave an iced coffee or an iced smoothie of some sort, but regardless I am just taking great comfort in coffee shops at the moment. They feel very cosy and just seem to be a great comfort from this heat. In this case though, I went on a day trip to a local little village and this Costa was one of the only places I could go and actually eat something. So sometimes these chains are necessary as they are some of the very few places that stock any vegan options.

Despite the heat (30 degrees!) I decided to go for something that I hoped would keep me filled up for most of the afternoon. I always enjoy a good meatball wrap (and am still so upset that Subway discontinued their meatless meatball sub) so I decided to try this. Some protein, a decent amount of carbs and my hope is that it would keep me fuelled for the rest of my very active walk around the village and the fields around it.

Now first off, the staff did heat this wrap up for me which I think did amplify it a fair bit. The wrap became quite crispy which was quite enjoyable. The only downside is that by heating it up the meatballs and the sauce inside the wrap were hotter than molten lava. No joke. I tried to take a bite and burned the roof of my mouth so badly I couldn’t feel it for the rest of the day. So just be warned. I had to leave it to the side for about 10 minutes so it could cool down to a more digestible temperature.

Once it was cool enough to eat, it was pretty tasty. The meatballs I think are just your generic vegan meatball alternative. I don’t think they’re a brand and according to their ingredients list, it’s all just made by Costa. So if you like basic vegan meatballs, you’ll like this wrap. Nothing special but nice enough. The sauce was a tomato marinara sauce, melted cheese and roasted red peppers. Basically, meatballs and spaghetti, but in a wrap.

As I say, it didn’t do anything special. It was tasty and was surprisingly filling but it didn’t really push any boundaries when it came to vegan food and creative meals. I believe this cost around £4, which is pretty standard for a coffee shop sandwich. Actually I think most pre-made sandwiches these days around £4 so this price seems the average. It isn’t worth more than this but then I don’t think it tries to be. It’s your basic sandwich, enough to quickly grab and eat, and tastes nice enough for the price paid.

Overall: 6/10. It’s a perfectly good option if you’re in a rush and just need a decent sandwich to get you through the day.
