Now I am not much of a regular at Starbucks because I don’t drink coffee. So I may be a bit late to this party. The weather here in England has somehow jumped from 12 degrees to 30 degrees (I will resist the urge to make a comment here about climate change) this weekend just passed, and there is something about a searing hot British summer that makes me crave smoothies and iced drinks. So I stopped in to my local chain and this little muffin caught my eye.
Now I remember that really odd time period in our lives where everyone was baking banana bread during the covid lockdowns. And I remembered just how good banana bread and other banana based baking could be. I also haven’t had a muffin in ages and I decided to just treat myself. Because why not?!
Now I always find that any coffee shop cake is always slightly dry, so that you are somewhat forced into buying a cup of tea or a coffee to wash it down with. This muffin was no exception. It was ever so slightly crumbly so was a bit of a messy eat, but I have to admit that it was actually a very fresh muffin so far as I could tell. It wasn’t so dry that it demanded a drink to go with it, as I feel the banana and the caramel filing helped to keep it moist.
The caramel also added a very nice sweetness to the muffin. The majority of the muffin was just banana, with the toffee only being added as a very light pipping at the very top. The banana flavour itself was nice and I think they must have also added a little hint of cinnamon just to balance out the overpowering banana taste. It felt very autumnal I have to admit. Which is great for me because autumn is my favourite season and so any excuse to celebrate the cosy season is fine by me! I do not know if this is meant to be a summer exclusive treat but it definitely felt like more of a autumnal/wintery treat.

The muffin itself is very dense and is also a pretty decent size. I did finish it, but also on this day it was technically my breakfast so I hadn’t actually had anything else to eat with it. It did fill me up quite nicely though and definitely satiated that sweet treat craving in this summer heat.
Cost wise this muffin cost me £3.50 which is…well it’s expensive for a muffin but at the same time, that seems quite standard for a coffee shop. As I said at the start, I very rarely go to coffee shops so for me this was absolutely a one time treat that I am very unlikely to repeat anytime soon. Is it worth a try? I mean sure, if you happen to want such a treat with your coffee, but I wouldn’t say it is any better than any other sweet treat that you could find on your local high street.
