Huel Thai Green Curry

And so the testing continues! I have to admit I am so far very impressed at the variety of meals that are on offer with Huel. When I think that most ready meal brands on the market have maybe two or three vegan options to rotate through, there are 10 at Huel! Obviously there are way more products on offer than just these hot and savoury meals, so I am very tempted to try out some of their protein powders and other such products just to see if the quality is consistent across all of them. The entire brand is also vegan and plant-based so…be rude not to really!

The thai green curry is easily one of the best ones I have tried. As with all of these Huel products, it is a powdered, dried product that you add boiling water to and it rehydrates into a full meal. I have tried a few before and I have to say that while it is a very posh pot noodle, the meals are still tasty and are surprisingly filling. Now personally, I am not eating these for a culinary experience on my lunch. These products are designed to hit high protein macros and as that is one of my main goals this year for my health and fitness, that’s all I need my meals to do at the moment – hit my macros. Flavour is very often ignored, or at least an afterthought.

But this Thai green curry tastes really good. Now it does have a very hefty kick and is definitely spicy, so just be warned if you’re not good with spice. Now I am not that great with spicy food but this is just the right balance. As it is macro focused, the portion size is just enough to give your mouth a nice bit of heat without being so much that your mouth is burning for the next few hours. Now the portion does look quite small, but it is alarmingly filling. The portion they recommend is 99g of product, which doesn’t sound like much. But when you add the water and it has been cooked and rehydrated, it’s very filling indeed, to the point that I have struggled to finish the last few mouthfuls. It is very filling but it also keeps me full for the rest of the day. I am currently training for a half marathon, and having this at my 1pm lunch, with maybe a breakfast bar at about 4pm, is more than enough to get me through a 10km+ run.

Now this one is made with rice and similar to the tomato and herb product, I find that it needs slightly more water than it initially directs. Of course this is all down to personal preference, but I find that with the recommended amount of water used the meal is just very stodgy and there are the odd crunchy piece of rice. I therefore add roughly 250ml of water and that makes it into the consistency you would expect of a thick curry, and also makes sure every grain is properly rehydrated and cooked through. Again, just a personal preference but something to bear in mind if you do wish to try this.

I have to say that the price for these is still quite reasonable. This packet contains 7 servings (although that’s if you want this as a meal replacement, otherwise you could get 14 servings of a side dish if that it what you would prefer) and every packet contains the same amount of servings. On their website you have to order 3 products per order, however I have found it really easy to use and have now changed my orders multiple times hassle free to try the other products that are on offer. 3 packets costs me £56, but this covers me for a whole month of lunches whilst at work.

I have also mentioned before that the beauty of these is the convenience. The three packets are delivered to me, I take them to work with me, and they sit in my desk at work. When it’s time for lunch I just pick which one I want for that day and go and make my meal. That’s it. I don’t have to do any meal prep the night before like I used to, I don’t have to manually calculate the macros for each new meal, and I don’t have to worry about loads of washing up after the meal is made. For me, especially with my fitness goals, this product is great. Is it a culinary masterpiece? Not overly, but it is tasty and it gets the job done in a hassle free and simple manner.

Overall: 8/10. One of the best flavours so definitely worth the try!
