Huel Tomato and Herb

Slowly making my way through the entire Huel range it seems. I have previously written about the chicken and mushroom meal, and after about a week I started on the next bag that I had. This time being tomato and herb. This one has very similar macros, is plant based and vegan friendly, and works very much like a Pot Noodle in that you just add in the product and add boiling water to it.

This one had rice, mixed peppers, tomatoes, herbs and quinoa. When mixing, I found that it needed slightly more water than normal as the rice and the quinoa combined sucked up any moisture it could find. My first meal was therefore a little too crunchy! I think the quinoa worked very well though as this is a very filling meal. The portion may look quite small (roughly 50g of product) but I did find it incredibly filling, to the point where the last few mouthfuls were quite the struggle at times as I already felt like I’d eaten a whole plate full of food. The goodness therefore is that I didn’t really feel any need for anything extra as the afternoon stretched on, and would usually make it through a whole gym session without needing an extra bite to eat before hand. It saw me through to dinner quite comfortable, and after a big gym day, dinner was very much welcomed!

Now I always find that quinoa is a very overpowering taste. It doesn’t matter what it is mixed with, I can always taste the quinoa. Thankfully, I really like quinoa so this isn’t that big a deal for me. It was only a small issue here though because it did not taste like tomato and herb. Maybe like slightly tomato-y quinoa? I had sort of expected it to taste like a tomato pasta, so quite sharp and tangy. But the quinoa definitely overtook any other flavours and gave it quite an earthy taste. So if you like quinoa, definitely try this. If you’re not a fan though, probably best to avoid this.

As I mentioned in my previous post, you can only buy these packets in groups of 3, which will cost around £56. As I said before, 3 packets lasts me roughly 4 weeks of lunch meals and that is with me having the double scoop recommended portion. If you wanted this just as a side dish or a small snack and only had one scoop each day, a packet would likely last you about 2 weeks. So three packets would last you about 2 months. So for £56, that is actually quite reasonable.

I think the biggest selling point of this product though, and all the others on offer in this range from Huel, is that it is super duper quick to make. There is literally no prep. I put two scoops into a little pot, add some boiling water, and then cover the pot for 10 minutes. After that, it is ready to eat. The instructions do say 5 minutes, but I found that 10 minutes was needed to make sure the rice wasn’t crunchy, and also made the meal a suitable temperature for consumption. This product also means that I can take it to work with me, leave it in my desk, and know that my lunches are sorted. No more meal prep, no more Tupperware. It really is like a slightly posher Pot Noodle.

Overall: 6/10. The quinoa is very overpowering in flavour so it isn’t really tomato and herb. It is, however, still quite tasty and still better than any other ready meal out there.
