Batch’d raspberry puddle

Now it would not be a weekend without a doughnut. As I’ve said in previous posts, I am spending the majority of my week eating super healthy (protein and veg all the way) and focusing on reaching my fitness goals. This usually means my meals are the same every singe week and are also, largely, pretty bland. But when the weekend comes – and by weekend I mean Saturday, because sunday is actually my biggest gym/work out day – I need sugar. I need something big and greasy and something very sweet just to get me through the week of workouts ahead, whilst also rewarding myself for my dedication the week before hand. And doughtnuts always hit the mark.

Luckily, a Batch’d pop up stall appeared in my local shopping centre and this place does not mess around when it comes to sweet treats. They do these cookie cakes (exactly what they sound like) that are the size of a brick, and their cookies are easily larger than a person’s hand. So when I saw they had some vegan doughnuts on offer that were nearly the size of a baby’s head, I knew I had to try one.

Now…looks were very deceiving here. This doughnut looks like it should be incredibly sickly and very, very sweet. But it was actually a very light doughnut. The actual body of the doughnut was more like a cake and it was very spongey, so no dense doughnut batter round here! The icing was also quite subtle. Definitely had a light raspberry flavour to it but it was not overpowering and wasn’t as sweet as the vibrant colour would suggest. The doughnut was also not a filled doughnut – which is something I had fully expected – but I think this worked well. Had the doughnut been filled I definitely think the jam filling would add extra sweetness that would just make this sickly, so I was actually very thankful that it was just your standard ring doughnut.

The doughnut was still sweet, but it was not overpowering. It wasn’t like a Doughnut Time doughnut where you think you’re about to go into sugar shock with how muh sugar each bite contains. The Batch’d doughnut definitely had that very light and fluffy cake feel to it, so while it was indeed a big doughnut, I didn’t finish it feeling bloated or sick. I did have a craving for a big cup of tea though as it was ever so slightlydryier than I was expecting.

This doughnut was £4.95 which is more or less the same price as the Doughnut Time offerings. I feel that this price was ever so slightly too much. The doughnut is huge – no questions there – so I would expect it to be higher priced than your standard sized doughnuts on the market. However the douhnut itself wasn’t anything mind blowing. With Doughnut Time, the doughnuts are spectacles in their own right and are so filled with sugar and calories that it would make sense for them to be more expensive. But the Batch’d one was quite simple. It was still lovely and I would absolutely eat it again, but I think £5 per doughnut is slightly too high – I feel £4 would be far more reasonable.

Defnitely worth a try if you see a Batch’d store on your journeys, but not something that I would recommend getting every week. As with all of these things, they tend to work better as a seldom treat – maybe once a month – than an every day staple.

Overall: 8/10. A surprisingly light and airy doughnut, but somewhat expensive for what you get.
