Krispy Kreme vegan original glaze

So until very recently (i.e the beginning of this year) you could only order the vegan original glazed doughnuts online and could only order them as a 12 pack. Now…as much as I could, would and wanted to order a 12 pack of vegan doughnuts to try them, I could not justify that. I am actually due to get married in 2023 so a 12 pack of doughnuts would not ensure I look good on the wedding day. But my local store has finally started carrying these as part of their selection.

I also noticed an interesting point raised by an online vegan group I am a part of, where someone pointed out that the recipe for the original glazed and the vegan original glazed is the exact same. According to this post, the vegan option is offered for marketing reasons, as Krispy Kreme found that people would not pick the original glazed if it was labelled as vegan. Now I don’t know how true any of that is (although it wouldn’t surprise me if I’m honest) but I was curious. And they were right! the ingredients label for the original glazed and the vegan version is the exact same. They both list only wheat as a potential allergen and do not list any animal products as part of their ingredients. Even checking their nutritional information online it seems that the only difference is the vegan original glazed is certified vegan, while the original is not. Now luckily the vegan original glazed costs the exact same as the original but it did make me stop and think about the ‘vegan’ label. Had they not released a vegan label for the orignal glaze, would I still have tried the original after checking the ingredients list? Would you guys?

Needless to say, there is zero difference in taste. It’s the same doughnut. Is it the best doughnut I have ever tasted? Not even close. But is it a decent doughnut for when you just need that little sweet kick or a plain treat? Very much so. The doughnut is light and fluffy and the glaze is just the right amount of sweetness needed – not so much to be overpowering or sickly, but not so little that it’s barely noticeable. There isn’t much to say about this. If you’ve had an original glazed and you enjoyed it, then you will also enjoy the vegan glaze, because they are the exact same doughnut.

If this little experience has taught me something though, it is to always check the ingredients. Even things that are not labelled as vegan could turn out to be vegan friendly. It is also always best to check because some companies will add ‘vegan’ to an already accidentally vegan product and try to charge extra money for it.

Overall: 10/10. It is just an original glazed doughnut with the word ‘vegan’ in front of it. I’m not quite sure if that counts as an alternative? But it’s not a ‘new option’ because it’s just a doughnut that has been renamed? What do you guys think?
