Doughnut Time Gordon Jamsey

What a better way to start my New Year than a trip to Doughnut Time. It is easy to say that their doughnuts are – without any doubt – the best doughnuts on the market right now. At this point I must have tried most of their options so I definitely have the experience behind me to make such a bold statement. These doughnuts are next level and absolutely worth a try if you get the chance. Plus each time I have visited they tend to have around 70% of their offerings to be vegan friendly.

The most recent offering was the Gordon Jamsey doughnut. Now normally I am not a fan of filled doughnuts – they are usually way too overfilled and can get very messy very quickly while trying to eat them. But I decided to try something new. New Year and all that!

Now I think that Doughnut Time have altered their recipes ever so slightly because this doughnut (along with the last few I have tried) was surprisingly not very sweet. The jam itself and the icing gave a nice, soft sweetness, but the doughnut itself tasted more like bread than doughnut. It was a much more savoury base than the very sugary sweet base you’d expect. Personally, I think this works really well. The jam and the icing were very sweet, so having a sweet doughnut base would have made the sweetness far too overpowering. You definitely would be in sugar shock after two bites. But this doughnut was very satisfying.

I was also very pleased to say that the filling was the perfect amount. No embarrassing explosion of filling when you bite into the doughnut, but not such a tiny amount that it makes the filling redundant. The jam was sweet and tangy – strawberry I believe – and provided a nice little fruity punch with the soft doughnut base. The strawberry dusting on top of the doughnut also made the whole doughnut taste exactly like a Jammie Dodger. Which is arguably one of the best vegan cookies out there – and yes, Jammie Dodgers are indeed vegan friendly!

The only issue I had with it was that while it was a lovely doughnut, it didn’t have that decadent feel to it that some of the others did. My personal favourite is the Liam Hemsworthy because hat doughnut is like a whole dining experience. This one felt like a slightly posh jam doughnut, but I wouldn’t say it did anything spectacular with it. Perhaps it would be better if the jam had actual chunks of the fruit in it? Just something to ponder.

Now Doughnut Time are expensive – around £5 per doughnut, depending on whether or not it is a seasonal offering or not – so probably not a treat you could have on too regular a basis. However, so far as expensive food treats go, I feel that Doughnut Time is absolutely worth the price. The doughnuts are consistently wonderful and they are HUGE portions too. I am not joking when I say that one doughnut just about fits into my hand. You would pay £5 for a doughnut but you would not need to have any other sweet treat for at least another 6 months. These will satisfy any sugar craving you had.

Overall: 9/10. A very, very good offering. Definitely worth a try if you get the opportunity. Have you tried it? What were your thoughts? Which one should I make sure to try next?
