I finally met my donut match…and by match I mean that it was far too much for me and I had no choice but to accept defeat. I have said it before but I say it again, Doughnut Time has some real treats. Every donut they make is an experience to eat and for me they are a must have whenever I take a trip into London.
As you can see from the photo, the donut is…something else. Just look at that decoration! How many donuts have you had that are Percy Pig themed? As with all Doughnut Time donuts this was roughly the size of a child’s head. But I was ready for this. The size is one of the main selling points of the entire donut. This donut was your standard sponge donut, with strawberry jam in the middle, pink strawberry icing and two Percy Pig candies (yes, there is now a vegan option for these!) and I think we can all agree that it is a super cute donut to look at.

But this time I was too ambitious. Now I can handle sugar – I have a horrific sweet tooth – but this bad boy genuinely made me feel sick after the first bite. I just could not contend with it. the level of sugar in this donut is unlike anything I have had before. The sponge itself was very sugary, and the jelly and icing just added this entirely new level of sugar to it all. I mean the sponge and the jelly inside was tasty, but after one bite I felt like I could see noises I was so hyped up on sugar.
My partner managed this with no issues though. He ate the whole thing without hesitation while I sat next to him and contemplated the new galaxies I was able to see thanks to the sugar rush. He decribed it as a spongy Percy Pig and I could definitely agree with that. If you have ever had a Percy Pig, you will be familiar with the slight strawberry flavour and little kick of sugar. So I guess this was actually a Percy Pig on steroids. Personally I found the jam filling to be so overly sweet and sickly that it completely overpowered anything else in the donut, which was really disappointing. The icing was also quite thick and as I am not a big fan of icing anyway, this was obviously a negative aspect for me. I was expecting quite the treat with this, expecting it to be quite a subtle flavouring in line with Percy Pig candy, but instead I spent most of the afternoon afterwards feeling quite queasy. Then again, my partner ate the whole thing and felt absolutely fine so…perhaps I am losing my taste for sugar?
I did not think I would see the day when a donut would actually conquer me. But this one did. As I say the one bite was very tasty, and was definitely on the same level of quality as all Doughnut Time donuts are. However this one absolutely needs to be shared – so if you attempt to take it all on by yourself, please know that I warned you. Again this donut cost £4.95 which yes for a donut is expensive, but I will always say that Doughnut Time is worth that price level. Especially when I realise that these donuts are a once in a while treat and not something I would ever purchase everyday. Plus, with Piggy Smalls especially, I am pretty certain it covers your daily sugar allowance for the entire year.

I fear this donut will be the marmite of donuts: You will either love this donut with every fibre of your being or you will admit defeat one bite in due to the sugar shock. I don’t think this would be a donut that you should try unless you have a) just ran a marathon and need the sugar rush or b) enjoy feeling like a hummingbird for the rest of the day due to the amount of sugar now rushing through your veins. Make your choice, but choose wisely.
