A new season means a new product from Lush. Autumn is my favourite season of the year because I get to wrap up in lovely fluffy jumpers, enjoy pumpkin spiced everything and Halloween is always a fun time period with the spooky vibes and witchy feel in the air. I love it. This autumn especially has been a very exciting time for me: I finally qualified into my chosen profession after 10 years of working for it, and I also turned 30. It has been a big period of change and I thought it was cool that my big life changes came at the same time as the seasonal change.
I also love Lush products, so to celebrate my favourite time of year and a very big time of personal change, I decided to treat myself to something seasonal from Lush. Now every season they bring out a new range of products and these products are consistently good quality. Now I am sure that there are a few duds amongst these collections, but as I have never bought a whole collection I can’t really comment. I do find though that even the bad ones from Lush are still leagues better than most other options out there from other providers, so you’ll never really lose when you buy Lush products.

I decided to try their Ghost in the Dark soap bar. It is quite simple in that it contains lemongrass and bergamot, but a fun feature is that it supposedly glows in the dark. Now I personally did not ever see this happen – I did leave him to ‘charge’ for about 10 minutes before my shower each time but no glow for me I’m afraid. Maybe he needed more time in the light, but with the price of electricity these days I was not going to experiment too much. He did smell lovely though and it was quite a refreshing smell without being overpowering or too much citrus. Now personally I think he would have worked really well had he smelt of marshmallow or candy floss (or really any type of candy) to fit in with the Halloween vibe, but I appreciate that most people don’t want to smell like candy all day.
Quality wise he was lovely. He lathered up very well and left my skin feeling hydrated and soft, which is very helpful now that the cold english weather has truly crept back. Now he did have a defined figure and details on his face when I first got him (see the picture above) but after about 2 weeks of daily use, he definitely became just a regular bar of soap. Still good quality and still smelt great, but his poor spooky face was lost quite quickly.

Another critique I have of this bar is that it did not last that long. I didn’t even get a full month from this before it just broke down into the tiny shards of soap that are hard to wash with. So quite disappointing as he was quite expensive – £6! Argueably that is a standard price for a Lush soap bar but still vastly more expensive than the bars you can buy at a supermarket for £1. I know Lush is meant to be higher quality and far more creative with their ingredients, and as a company they do a lot for social justice issues and animal rights campaigning, so in that sense I can understand paying £6 for soap when the money is going towards so many important causes. But for me, it is not really sustainable from a finance perspective.
I therefore buy Lush when I want something special – when I want something more than just soap. Yes I want to be clean, but if it also means I can smell like candy or a bouquet of flowers or have a very luxurious bath, then I will always go to Lush because they always deliver in that regard. In that sense, I guess it is good that this ghost is only a seasonal offering – he is here for a good time, not a long time, and that’s just what you want sometimes. But then you do wonder why they didn’t go full Halloween with him?
